About Me

Hi I'm Joshua Hess

I am a software engineer with a passion for diving deep into any solution I come across and a love for technology. When I was 12 I started getting into coding and have been working professionally as a software engineer since I was 18.

My story start growing up homeschooled on a small family farm milking cows. You wonder how did someone like that would end up as a software engineer. Well glad you asked, it is an interesting story.

My parents got our first computer I believe sometime in 2001. I would have been 7 at the time and didn't really have a chance to get into computers at that time.

By the time I was 10 however I had been starting to take an interest in them. We had a new computer by that as the old one had crashed.

Well the new one crashed as well. I told my dad that I thought I knew what was wrong with so he took me to a friends house to see if I could figure it out for sure.

After doing some research it appeared like the issue with the powersupply so Dad bought a new one. We plugged it in and low and behold the bugger fired up.

As I got older, found google (Now Trimble) sketchup and the sketchy physics plugin. Sketchy Physics was developed in ruby and became my first language. I also managed several open source projects for a time.

At 17 I got a job at a local shop in town doing computer work and then when I was 20, through a series of God orchestrated events involving a bible school, canceled choir tour and canceled English teacher stint ended up back home working for that local shop again 2 weeks before Heartland Business Systems bought it out (The choir tour would have been 3 weeks long).

I have been working at Heartland Business Systems since. It took them a bit to figure out if I could do anything :D, but I currently hold a Senior position on our web team.

Other interesting things about me, I married my lovely wife in 2020 after meeting during covid, we have 3 children one of which has had to undergo a bone marrow transplant for a rare immune disorder. They bring a lot of joy into my life.

My belief in Jesus has been a rock through it all for me. He is the way, the truth and the life even when so many of his so called followers do not have any of his attributes.

The idea for Block Farm Editor was born out of a question of, I wonder if I could build a visual editor in Umbraco which is easily extensible and here we are.
